The Desires of My Heart

Psalms 37:4 - "Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."

We often here this verse quoted concerning folks receiving something from God they want.  They quote this promise that if we delight ourselves in the Lord then He will give you the desires of your heart.  It is a great promise and I love it.  But what does 'delight in the Lord' really mean?

Does it mean we read our Bible, we pray?  Does it mean we do good things?  What does it really mean and how do we do it?  When we look up the word delight it says 'to take a high degree of pleasure or enjoyment from'.  So just doing things that isn't going to meet the threshold of the word delight.  We are to do them with joy, with anticipation.  We are to long to do them, because it is what God wants.  It means that we love God and we realize that love is a VERB it takes action.

When our heart becomes wrapped up in loving the Lord, doing what He wants becomes more a natural part of our being.  Psalms 119:16 - "I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word."  We don't look to see how far we can push to the edge of what He wants.  We strive to do exactly what He wants.  I often hear 'well we are under grace, not under the law' as an excuse for skirting some of the directives God has given us.  Yes, we are under grace.  But if we DELIGHT in the Lord we will not be looking for ways to make what we want appear right.

As we delight in the Lord, we may also find that the desires of our heart change.  What we once wanted may have been selfish or for us to receive attention or glory to ourselves instead of God.  As we delight in Him and we draw closer to Him, we find ourselves wanting to honor and glorify Him.  It is no longer about us, it is about Him.

We love him because He loved us with an everlasting love!  He gave all for us!  He suffered for us.  He died for us!  Hallelujah He rose for us and HE IS COMING BACK FOR US!  As I see how this world is going more and more evil every day, I long for His return.  Yet at the same time, I sorrow because I have friends and family that do not know this blessed Savior.  If He came back today, they would go to hell.  That thought should break our hearts to the point that we pray without ceasing for God to draw them to Him.  Lord, today and every day make that the desire of my heart, that my friends and family will come to know You as their Savior.
